I know it appears to be the latest fad or diet band-wagon to jump on, but we have been considering going gluten-free for some time. Years ago, K was having horrible digestive issues- she was underweight, not “solidifying” things and just appearing to have a bad time with eating. We took her to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh where they did many tests on her, including looking at Celiac Disease and Cystic Fybrosis. All tests came back negative, luckily, but I have since read that there can be a high false negative for Celiac tests in kids. Fast-forward to this spring when my SIL was diagnosed with Celiac and we discovered that it can be hereditary.
So, do we have a family issue? Is the excema/allergy/food sensitivity/reflux we see due to a food allergy? Time to bite the bullet. We’ll be running an 8 week trial to see if there are any changes without gluten in our lives. I will be interested to see what our new pediatrician says about all this, as she appears to be big on nutrition and holistic medicine.
I’ll try to link to sites I come across in my search for good gluten free foods. I’ll start with this link– not all gluten free, but plenty of good foods none-the-less! My husband will be writing his take on all this on his site, too. If any of you out there have suggestions or thoughts, I’d love to hear from you. This is a bit of a daunting change- luckily not a life or death one. Onward and upward!
